Introduction:
Lip-reading classes are for anyone with or without a hearing loss. This class can help re-build confidence lost through deafness whilst providing opportunities for self-help, mutual support and friendship with people who understand hearing loss. The course will help you deal with everyday communication and re-build your confidence. The course isFREE to the hearing impaired.

Study Mode & Location:
This 10 week part-time day course will be held at:

  • Bamber Bridge Learning Centre, 60 School Lane, Bamber Bridge, Preston, PR5 6QE.

    Course Content:
    The aim of the lipreading course is to improve communication skills for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and their relatives or friends.

    Learning takes place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where the emphasis is on the conversation skills so often lost with an acquired hearing loss.

    During the course we discuss a wide variety of topics connected to hearing loss and so re-build self-confidence. These include:

    • Communication tactics in various situations.
    • Finger spelling and numbering.
    • The ear, how we hear and hearing aids.
    • Basic speech movements.
    • Information about environment aids.


    For lipreading practice we use a variety of stories and exercises covering many different subjects, which means there should be something to interest everyone.

    Assessment:
    There is no formal examination for this course so a variety of assessment methods will be used.

    Careers & Progression Opportunities:
    This course can lead to other ACE courses or to OCNW (Open College of the North West) START or A unit courses.

    You can enrol on any of our ACE (Adult Continuing Education) courses by phone or in person. Simply phone or call into the Preston College Advice Centre. We accept SOLO and major credit cards (eg Access, Visa, Switch, Delta) EXCEPT American Express. Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible.
