Living and Learning

    This is a programme that runs 4 ½ days a week for 23 hours per week over 34 weeks per year. It can be for up to three years depending on individual need.

Living and Learning Entry Requirements
There are no formal requirements

The programme is designed for post 16 students with severe learning difficulties who are accepted onto the programme as a result of school reviews and discussions with the students and their parents/ carers.

Content
The aims of this three-year programme are to enable students to develop life skills relevant to future adult life.

During the programme the students will be offered opportunities
  • To improve communication skills
  • To make choices and accept responsibilities
  • To increase their independence and social skills
  • To develop self-awareness and maturity
  • To build on existing skills and learn new ones
  • To gain accreditation and recognition of their achievements
The students work on projects to develop their individual skills in the following curriculum areas
  • Daily Living Skills
  • Practical skills
  • Personal care and presentation
  • Community and Leisure
  • Communications
Assessment
The students have an initial induction and assessment period and then work towards individual targets based on the following skills:
  • To follow instructions
  • To follow routines
  • To make choices
  • To relate to others
  • To behave appropriately
  • To keep safe
  • To take care of belongings
  • To communicate
  • To take part in activities
The students gain certification for their achievements at the end of the year.

Additional Information
The students have their own personal tutor and there are student support assistants who help to support them throughout the college day.

Close contact is kept with parents, carers, Social Services etc. throughout the programme and plans for the students' future are formulated at their individual leaver's reviews. At the end of the three years the students may continue their education by joining the Living and Learning Adults programme which runs for 3 days a week for up to a 2-year period.

College transport is available for students under 19 years of age at the commencement of the programme.

Progression You can progress to the Living and Learning for Adults programme or to day care provision.
