The LLM Flexible Study gives students access to all of the LLM modules currently being offered by the School of Law, wherever they are taught and by whatever method.
It comprises of existing modules from:
- the LLM in London (sample timetable);
- the LLMs in Paris and Piraeus, where block teaching is offered;
- the QMUL online programme in International Dispute Resolution
- the Distance Learning LLM in Computer and Communication Law, and
- the Modules from the LLM Technology, Media and Telecommunications Law (Paris/DL)
- the Postgraduate Diplomas in Dispute Resolution (Arbitration) and Dispute Resolution (Mediation) (Distance Learning) *Suspended for 2018-19*
Students can enrol for a September or January start. Over the course of two to four years they will build up 180 credits, of which at least 45 credits must be dissertation. A minimum of 45 credits must be taken each year of study for September starters and a minimum of 22.5 credits for the January intake. Modules must be chosen at the beginning of each academic year for the academic year ahead. You should be aware that London lectures are held both during the day and in the evening. In exceptional circumstances, a break in study can be requested.
DurationThe time allowed to study this LLM is from two to four years.
The LLM requires the successful completion of 180 credits, which can be completed by a combination of the following:
- London, Paris and Piraeus Modules – 22.5 credits
- Distance Learning Modules 15 credits
- One or two dissertations of 15,000 words (45 credits per dissertation)
- QMUL online programme in International Dispute Resolution - 30 credits
Examples of possible routes to study and completion of the LLM (over two to four years)
- 6 taught modules of 22.5 credits (London, Paris, Piraeus); 15,000 word dissertation
- 4 taught modules of 22.5 credits (London, Paris Piraeus); 45 credits from distance learning modules; 15,000 word dissertation
- 2 taught modules of 22.5 credits (London, Paris, Piraeus); 90 credits from distance learning modules; 15,000 word dissertation.
A dedicated programme administrator will work with students to ensure that their module diet:
- contains no duplication of study of modules
- that sufficient credits are taken across relevant modules to ensure a specialist LLM is achieved if wished.
It is students’ responsibility to ensure that you hold immigration permission that allows you to study. As this is a part-time programme, QMUL cannot sponsor a Tier 4 immigration application. You may be able to apply for Short-Term Student immigration permission, but we have been advised by the Home Office that you would only be able to stay in the UK for a maximum total of six months during your programme. Please note that the exam period is in Semester 3 from May to June. This may mean that you are unable to choose certain module configurations. For more information, please see the QMUL Advice and Counselling Service guide “What Immigration permission do I need to study at Queen Mary?”.
