Course Contents
Session 1
Relevant Legislation, including Manual Handling Operations Regulations, 1922
Informal Lecture with flipchart. Delegate handout.
At the end of this session delegates should:
- Apreciate how the Manual Handling Operations Regulations, 1992 affect them as employees
- understand the role of the employer with regard to these regulations
- be able to apply this knowledge to their work
- be familiar with the implications of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- be familiar with the implications of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992
Session 2
Causes of injury- anatomy of the spine
Informal lecture with flipchart. Group discussion. Visual aids. Delegate handout.
At the end of this session delegates should:
- apply their understanding of the workings of the spine to the ways in which they conduct Manual Handling tasks.
- be better able to avoid and teach others to avoid back injuries caused by poor posture and inefficient movement.
- apply their understanding of the workings of the spine to the ways in which they conduct Manual Handling tasks
- be better able to avoid and teach others to avoid back injuries caused by poor posture and inefficient movement.
Session 3
The biomechanics of good handling techniques (45 minutes)
Informal lecture. Group discussion. Simulation. Delegate handouts.
At the end of this session delegates should:
- Appreciate the principles of biomechanics
- apply the principles of biomechanics to the efficient movement of loads
Session 4
Practical work using recommended techniques (1hr 40 mins)
Informal lecture. Demonstration. Group participation. Tutor feedback. Group discussion.
Demonstration in the workplace of stages involved in the ´base lift technique´.
Delegates to practise ´lift´ with trainer´s guidance. Pushing and pulling. Team lifts.
At the end of the session delegates should:
- Be able to move and handle loads using only safe handling techniques
- Appreciate how the use of such techniquees can be of benefit to delegates and their staff in the reduction of Manual Handling injuries.
