Course programme

Learning outcomes

  • By the end of this course you will have a thorough understanding of how to approach exhibition design from initial idea generation through to final concept.
  • You will understand how to analyse exhibitions that you visit
  • You will leave with an idea for an exhibition that you have worked on and can be added to your portfolio

London

In London you will be introduced to the concept of exhibition design and the different techniques employed by designers to create an absorbing, memorable exhibition. You will learn about the visitor journey, flow, how to tell a story within a space and the power of objects and other media in telling these stories.

Through a combination of workshops, visits and analysis of what you have experienced you will start to understand exhibitions from a range of different perspectives. You will learn how to map visitor journeys, how to use and display objects (or how to represent an idea or concept with no physical object) and how narrative theory can be applied to a space or beyond a physical area using new technologies and other devices.

Berlin

Whilst in Berlin you will build on the theory learned in London and take a more practical approach to exhibition design. You will focus on creating an exhibition design from concept to pitch stage while gathering insights into the work of professional design studios and institutions.

You will visit museums and take part in workshops as part of the course.
The idea of the workshop is to give an overview over the main aspects of creating a concept and the design for an exhibition. You will be tasked with developing an exhibition in 4 stages and learning different methods along the way:

  • Idea Finding and Research – analysing complex ideas to generate ideas of an exhibition
  • Concept and Story – through a lecture and guided workshop you will start to develop your idea into a story that can be told through an exhibition.
  • Design Development and Proof of Concept – you will design your exhibition balancing your overall vision with practical restraints imposed upon you.

Presentation and Documentation – You will learn a range of techniques required to present your concept including illustration, small scale model building, basic post production and compositing in Adobe Photoshop.

The course will conclude by presenting your designs to a professional jury who will review the individual design processes and give ideas for improvement.
