Course programme
The number of people aged over 85 in England is expected to rise from 1.055 to 2.959 million between 2006 and 2036. This is an increase of approximately 180%.
This dramatic change in demographics means that more emphasis must be placed on issues affecting older people in society.
Our Loss and Depression in Elders course is a one day training course which has as its focus issues of loss for older people relating not just to bereavement but also exploring social, psychological and sensory aspects. This comprehensive training also looks in detail at depression in older people and explores treatments available and also assessment tools for use in determining whether an elderly person is suffering from depression.
See below for the Learning Outcomes and some of the Descriptive Content of the course.

Descriptive Content
Issues of loss in older people including social, psychological, physical/sensory and bereavement aspects
In this section the group would share experiences of work undertaken with older people and consider the effects of normal transition, change and loss around:
Social aspects such as: loss of status; occupation; finance; isolation;
Bereavement aspects such as death of partners, friends and ex colleagues
Loss issues related to normal transition and change and the clinical condition of depression
In this section the group will consider what might be considered to be normal loss issues and recognising the onset on clinical depression. It will be important to emphasise that depression is not a normal condition for elders and that it can become a long term condition if not treated.
