You should have (or expect to be awarded) an undergraduate degree of at least second class standard in a relevant/related subject. You might also be considered for some programmes if you aren’t a graduate or your degree is in an unrelated field, but have relevant experience and can show that you have the ability to work at postgraduate level. What you'll study You'll study the following modules: Module title Credits. Material Culture Material Culture 30 credits In this seminar-based module you’ll investigate the ways in which anthropologists think about and through ‘things’. You’ll gain an understanding of theories of materiality and how material culture figures in anthropological accounts and understandings of human diversity. 30 credits. Museum Anthropology Museum Anthropology 30 credits You’ll be introduced to current debates about heritage and museum practice, including: Curation as a means of knowledge production and of public cultural engagement. The history of museums and the museum in anthropological history. Museums as sites of imagination, distinction and exclusionary practice. 30 credits. Museum Practice Museum Practice 30 credits Taught by the Horniman Museum and Gardens, during this module you’ll benefit from the expert professional knowledge and skills of museum staff, and learn in a museum setting. You'll gain practical skills in curation and conservation, material and digital archives, museum education and engaging diverse audiences. 30 credits. MA in Anthropology & Museum Practice Dissertation MA in Anthropology & Museum Practice Dissertation 60 credits The dissertation is your opportunity to develop independent research in an area of your own personal interest, with supervision support from both academics and museum professionals. 60 credits. Option module/s (30 credits) You have the opportunity to tailor your studies and gain further specialist knowledge through your own choice of either one or two option modules. These can be chosen from the wide range of options offered by departments across Goldsmiths, or from another University of London institution. If you haven’t studied anthropology previously, you’ll also have the opportunity to audit the Masters-level Introduction to Social Anthropology module, which will enable you to hit the ground running with a solid grounding in the subject.
