Overview
There is an increasing demand for teachers of English worldwide, and the sector is no longer dominated by native English speaking teachers. The Applied Linguistics for English Language Teaching programme is aimed at pre-service teachers who want to learn the theory and practice of English Language teaching, and at in-service teachers who want to deepen their understanding of theories underlying the teaching of English language.
If you want to teach in higher education or private schools we can help you to gain a professional qualification (at your expense), such as a Certificate in English Language to Adults (CELTA) in addition to your masters award.
You will study the basic methods and theories of language teaching and language learning in the two core modules of ‘Approaches & Methods in English Language Teaching’ and ‘Second Language Acquisition’, which will provide a base from which you can then specialise. Optional modules cover topics such as curriculum design and materials evaluation, educational technologies and software, the teaching of English in professional and academic contexts, research methods in Applied Linguistics, discourse analysis, or, for native English speakers in particular, the fundamentals of English language, grammar and vocabulary.
You will be encouraged to reflect on language teaching and learning by becoming a language learner yourself: as part of the programme, you are required to study a foreign language for both semesters;
You will have opportunities to observe English language teaching in real classroom situations, and to reflect on good practice;
You will receive a thorough grounding in the theoretical aspects of language teaching and learning;
You will have opportunities to apply these theories by micro-teaching in a peer based environment.
