The MA Creative Practice and Performance (Contemporary Theatre) will allow you to hone your skills in creativity, contemporary arts practice, and performance. With a specific focus on contemporary theatre, this course will allow you to develop your understanding of theories and histories of performance and explore performance at the cutting edge, whilst enhancing your skills in creating and developing work for a variety of contexts.

The course allows you to work collaboratively in an industry-focused environment, enhancing your practice as a professional arts practitioner. At Wolverhampton, you can develop a specialism in contemporary performance in both practice and theory. The Performance Hub features two bespoke drama studios that are ideal for rehearsals and intimate performances. These studios feature audio-visual equipment and facilities which allow you to explore the role of technology in performance.

The Performance Hub allows students to work collaboratively in an industry-standard facility. Our Black Box Theatre is perfect for professional, public performances and our range of facilities allow you to work in an environment which replicates industry standards, increasing your knowledge of the skills require to work in a range of arts practices.

About this course

The MA in Creative Practice and Performance (Contemporary Theatre) gives you a systematic understanding and critical and creative awareness of practice at the forefront of the discipline. You will develop an understanding of histories and philosophies of performance, consider the ethical implications of performance practice and embed theory in your practice. The course has relevance to career goals in relation to teaching, drama therapy, education outreach and community arts, as well as in the range of dramatic literature embraced by the course. The course also embraces the broader understanding of this in areas such as a range of performance practices, directing and dramaturgy, playwriting, design and technical work, and arts administration.

This module explores the relationship between performing bodies and notions of identity. You will study key theoretical performance frameworks such as performativity, autobiography and autoethnography and investigate how identity is performed and constructed corporeally and performatively through performance. With an understanding of these frameworks you will develop your own creative performance practice, experimenting with presence, physicality and identity through an autoethnographic lens. These ideas and practices will be investigated and evaluated through practical workshops and the creation of original performance work.

This module is the culmination of your postgraduate study and allows you to demonstrate the depth of your knowledge and understanding gained through your course. In this module you will be required to undertake an extended independent project negotiated with your nominated supervisor. You will produce either a piece of empirical research, professionally related practice or performance related practice depending on your area of study.

In this module you will examine through lectures, workshops and simulations the notion of performance for site-specific venues. You will learn about how to develop and apply conceptual frameworks to production work with reference to theatre in non-conventional venues. Consideration will be made of current trends in the staging of theatrical events in non-theatre venues.


As a graduate of this course you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the field of contemporary theatre, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights at the forefront of their academic discipline.
  2. Apply a comprehensive range of techniques relevant to their own research, scholarship and practice in contemporary theatre.
  3. Apply knowledge in original ways, together with an understanding of how established techniques of research and practice are used to create and interpret knowledge in contemporary theatre.
  4. Evaluate critically current practice, research and advanced scholarship in contemporary theatre.
  5. Deal with complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements in the absence of complete data, and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.


You will need a good degree (2:2 or above) in Drama, Performance, Theatre Studies or a related subject.

All students will be interviewed to assess their suitability and preparedness for the course. Candidates will be considered with a significant track record of professional experience in a relevant field, but without a BA (Hons) degree. To do this, non-standard applicants in this category will be interviewed, and may be asked to produce a piece of written work as a means of assessing their suitability.

Applicants from overseas should also have a good standard of written and spoken English (normally IELTS 6.5 or equivalent).


Postgraduate Loan (Home Fee Status):

You may be able to get a postgraduate student loan from Student Finance England of up to £11,750 to help pay for a Master’s degree. Applications are made through Student Finance England and more information on the regulations and eligibility criteria can be found at Masters Loans gov.uk.
