From Brexit negotiations and the Syrian refugee crisis to deportation and surveillance, migration and mobility are fundamental forces shaping people's lives around the globe. Across the world, more and more people are migrating within and between countries for a variety of reasons. They face increasing constraints that seek to monitor, control and limit their movement in various ways. This programme is designed to advance your knowledge and understanding of contemporary processes of migration, developing a diverse set of skills that will enable you to investigate and address these issues.

About this course

You should have (or expect to be awarded) an undergraduate degree of at least upper second class standard in a relevant/related subject. You might also be considered for some programmes if you aren’t a graduate or your degree is in an unrelated field, but have relevant experience and can show that you have the ability to work at postgraduate level. What you'll study You'll study the following modules: Module title Credits. Critical Concepts in Migration Studies Critical Concepts in Migration Studies 30 credits In this module, you’ll gain a critical introduction to key concepts for thinking about migration and mobilities, from diaspora and transnationalism to deportation and surveillance. You’ll consider the productive work these concepts do, but also identify their potential limitations and their social and political consequences and effects. 30 credits. Investigating Migration and Mobilities Investigating Migration and Mobilities 30 credits Building on your knowledge from Critical Concepts in Migration Studies, this module will equip you with a range of methodological approaches and methods for investigating migration and mobilities. You’ll consider a range of historical and contemporary case studies that utilise both qualitative and quantitative research, and be introduced to ongoing research practice using innovative digital and visual methods being developed in the university. 30 credits. Platforms for Action in Migration and Mobilities Research Platforms for Action in Migration and Mobilities Research 30 credits Bringing together academics, activists and policy makers involved in migration and mobility studies, this module gives you the opportunity learn from and about encounters and intersections between research and practice. Your learning will centre around a series of public seminars organised in conjunction with the Migration Network, alongside student-led discussion and presentations on relevant topical issues. You’ll not only think about ways in which theory meets practice, but also reflect critically on the politics and processes involved in building platforms for meaningful engagement with practitioners. 30 credits. Dissertation Dissertation 60 credits You’ll complete your dissertation under the supervision of one or more members of staff with specialist research and teaching interests in migration and mobilities. The dissertation is your opportunity to bring together conceptual knowledge to conduct empirical research and engage in issues in an area of your own personal interest. 60 credits. Optional modules (30 credits) A choice of optional modules will give you the opportunity to gain specialist knowledge, drawing on the diverse range of expertise across Goldsmiths, such as: Digital Mobilities. Southern Migrations. Media Representations of Migration Issues. You may also choose optional modules from across related disciplines such as development, digital social science, gender, human rights and race.
