Associated Studios are thrilled to announce the launch of a Master’s Musical Theatre Performance, validated by the University of Wolverhampton. Associated Studios take pride in developing performers of the highest calibre. You will be challenged and nurtured, inspired to work to the best of your ability. This vocational MA offers one year of intensive practical training in Dance, Singing and Acting, the skills required to become an outstanding Musical Theatre performer.
Acting: Scene Study, Monologue, Character work, Shakespeare, Voice, Improvisation, Movement.
Singing: Individual 1-1 Singing Lessons, Ensemble Singing, Acting through Song, Pop/Rock Workshops, Repertoire Classes to build a comprehensive Audition portfolio covering all genres of song required for professional Musical Theatre auditions.

About this course
Our MA Musical Theatre Performance focuses equally on all three disciplines; singing, acting and dancing. You will have the opportunity to perform and receive individual feedback daily.
Masterclasses & Mock Auditions
Throughout your course, you will participate in masterclasses and workshops led by industry professionals, including mock auditions with Casting Directors, Producers and Agents. All Associated Studios tutors also work in professional theatre.
Individual Singing Lessons
As well as your ensemble singing lessons, music theory and song performance classes, students on this course will also receive 15 individual singing lessons with a top vocal coach.
Agent Showcase
One of the highlights of this course is our West End Industry Showcase. You will have the chance to do what you do best in front of top Agents, Casting Directors and Producers.
Full-scale Musical Production
In your final term of training, you will take part in a full-scale musical production in a professional theatre in London. Run like a professional company rehearsal, you will audition, rehearse and work with a professional creative team.

This module is designed as a personal investigation into the craft and artistry of acting. It allows you to enhance your knowledge of acting technique alongside developing your application of technique and theory in a suitable professional context. Working alongside a director, you will have the opportunity to make appropriate artistic decisions based on technical analysis, research and reflection.

This module will give you the opportunity to build your physical fitness and muscle memory. Through group classes you will encounter a wide range of techniques and styles which may include: ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance, as well as body conditioning.These classes will build a knowledge of dance technique and language, with the opportunity to apply it practically to performance work. You will have the opportunity to explore a range of choreographic styles, and learn and deliver routines which reflect current musical theatre industry practice.

This module gives you the opportunity to pursue a specialist area of interest though further study. You will undertake a research and performance (or practice-as-research) project which will contain both written and performance elements. The final shape of this project is determined by you in collaboration with your project supervisor. This module is self-directed and will require you to manage your own time and expectations in order to achieve your desired outcomes.

You will take part in a full-scale public performance of a musical. The module begins with an in-house casting process, following by an intensive rehearsal period. The public performance will be staged at an external venue within London and have a full artistic team including: artistic director, musical director, stage manager and choreographer, and technical crew. The module is focused on replicating professional industry standards.

This module is designed to further the development of connected singing performance. You will work on developing your audition portfolio using the ‘traffic light’ technique undertaken in the module Singing: Technique and Repertoire, and use this material to develop professional audition ready performances. You will work with your individual singing teacher, various musical directors, vocal coaches, directors and choreographers in collaborative ‘acting through song’ and mock audition classes, and use both expert and peer review to continue to build your personal performance methodology. You will be expected to maintain high levels of technical application, while finding clarity, nuance and flair within the artistic choices you make as a singer.

This module is designed to explore the technique and craft of singing. It will allow you to engage with singing in various contexts including: ensemble singing, individual technical tutorials. introduction to acting through song, music theory and musicianship, and group vocal technique. You will work within a repertoire framework which will allow you to explore the expanse of the musical theatre canon and will give you the opportunity to develop your understanding of style and genre.
OVERALL LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR MA MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE:
- Students will gain experience related to professional theatrical performance and production through practical application.
- Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of Musical Theatre in the past, present and future, and gain an understanding of a broad range of Repertoire. They will gain an understanding of the suitability of Repertoire to their own casting bracket, as well as developing an industry-ready audition portfolio.
- Students will gain professional-level skills required for a career in the musical theatre profession including dance technique, vocal technique and acting technique.
- Students will acquire an advanced knowledge of the art and craft of theatre, and specifically Musical Theatre.
- Students will learn to manage their independent learning, and personal and professional development in a way which will sustain them as analytical, creative and reflective performers.
- Students will learn to work effectively as creative and imaginative collaborative artists with the capacity to lead and to be led in a professional environment. Through this close association, we understand industry requirements and have a network of dedicated and highly experienced theatre practitioners who stand ready to offer you help and advice whilst you are studying with us, and after you embark on your career. All our coaches are leading industry practitioners including Musical Directors, Directors, Vocal Coaches, Choreographers, Writers, Composers and experienced Performers.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.
Please note that currently this course is not available to International applicants.
Successful completion of an undergraduate degree. A relevant subject at this level is not required but is desirable from candidates.
The University and Associated Studios will also consider accepting candidates who have not completed an undergraduate degree in the following circumstances:
• Applicants with a Level 6 DipTCL in Professional Musical Theatre or Dance from a TCL Accredited Course • Performers who have 5 years of professional experience in Musical Theatre, Stage Acting or Film/Television, with supporting references from reputable production companies, directors and producers.
All successfully short listed applicants will be invited to attend an audition at Associated Studios, London.
Applicants who are non-native speakers of English will be required to hold IELTS with an overall band score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each element or equivalent.
Postgraduate Loan (Home Fee Status):
You may be able to get a postgraduate student loan from Student Finance England of up to £11,750 to help pay for a Master’s degree. Applications are made through Student Finance England and more information on the regulations and eligibility criteria can be found at Masters Loans gov.uk.

Changes for EU students:
The UK government has confirmed that EU students starting courses from 1 August 2021 will normally be classified as Overseas (International) students for fee purposes. The University offers a generous 20% Loyalty Discount to students progressing from an undergraduate programme to a taught postgraduate programme, where both courses are University of Wolverhampton Awards.
There is no time limit on how long ago you completed your degree as long as this is your first Masters level qualification.

Self-funded:
If you are paying for the fees yourself then the fees can be paid in 3 instalments: November, January and April. More information can be found by clicking here.
Sponsored - Your employer, embassy or organisation can pay for your Tuition fees:
Your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.
We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.
Financial Hardship:
Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.

Most charities and trust funds offer limited bursaries targeted to specific groups of students so you will need to research whether any of them are relevant to your situation.
