Maintenance Operations Intermediate Apprenticeship

This programme is designed to give you the relevant training and education required to become successful and competent in a maintenance role. Learning through practical and theory sessions at the College is teamed with work-based experience and training in order to achieve a level 2 diploma alongside an NVQ in Maintenance Operations.

Course content
Diploma in Maintenance Operations Level 3

The Diploma comprises eight core units, each followed by a theoretical test. There will also be an end of year City & Guilds online exam and a 30 hour practical synoptic test covering all practical activities. Core units:

• Safe Working Practises in Construction


• Information and Quantities


• Building Methods and Construction Technology


• Masonry Trade Repairs


• Painting and Decorating and Associated Trade Repairs


• Plastering Trade Repairs


• Plumbing Trade Repairs


• Wood Trade Repairs

Practical activities include:

• Splicing Door Frames and Re-hanging Doors


• Fix Glass and Furniture to Doors


• Remove and Repair Damaged Roofing Components


• Cut and Fix Guttering


• Renew Basic Pumbing Components


• Renew Sink and SanitaryAappliance


• Cut out and Replace Damage Wall Tiling


• Renew Damaged Plasterboard and Plaster

NVQ/Diploma in Maintenance Operations A portfolio of evidence of work carried out in the workplace is required to demonstrate competence. This can include photographic evidence, personal statements, testimonies, and observations by College assessors. The portfolio is a mandatory requirement for this qualification and should include evidence from the four core units, plus one optional unit. A minimum of 82 credits must be gained to achieve the NVQ/Diploma. Apprentices are reviewed in their workplace by a training advisor every 12 weeks. Core units:

• Conforming to General Safety in the Workplace


• Conforming to Efficient Working Practices in the Workplace


• Moving and Handling Resources in the Workplace


• Confirming Work Activities and Resources for an Occupational Work Area in the Workplace

One from the following optional units:

• Erecting and Dismantling Access/Working Platforms in the Workplace


• Establishing Work Area Protection and Safety in the Workplace


• Clearing the Site and Handing over on Completion in the Workplace


• Providing and Monitoring Construction-related Customer Service in the Workplace

Plus units from various optional trade groups depending on your work role. Examples are:

• Carpentry


• Painting and Decorating


• Basic Plumbing


• Domestic Drainage (laying new or repairing old)


• Wall and Floor Tiling


• Remove and Repair Floor Screed


• Preparing Background Surfaces for Plasterwork


• Applying Finishing Plaster


• Repairing and Maintaining Roofing Components


• Repairing Basic Masonry and Stone Masonry Structures

As part of the Apprenticeship framework you will also study Employment Rights and Responsibilities, and Functional Skills Level 1 in English and maths.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal qualification requirements.Candidates should have a strong interest in the area of general maintenance. You will need to be dedicated and committed to your study and be responsible for your own learning. You will be required to attend an interview with the work based learning team and be asked to complete basic skills assessments in literacy and numeracy. You will also be required to pass a Construction Skills Trade Aptitude Test. Students on this course are required to be employed in a suitable work placement.

What next?

Career pathways may include technical support roles, with progression to a supervisory or management role. Possible progression to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Considering an apprenticeship?
Many young people look to an apprenticeship to gain valuable skills directly in the workplace.
You can apply for both an apprenticeship, and a full-time course as your back up,
but note that you will need to do some research to find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice
if you do not already have one.
