Fed up with buying clothes that don’t quite fit? Like that designer dress or fancy curtains but not the price? Then learn how to make your own! Get advice on patterns, fabrics and techniques. Continuing from the autumn term.
What will I learn during the course?
This course is aimed at both beginners and those with some sewing experience. The clothes course will cover:
• Taking accurate measurements
• How to choose a pattern and fabric
• Simple pattern alterations
• Garment construction techniques.
Soft Furnishings students will look at measuring & estimating fabric quantities, & construction techniques specific to the item they wish to make. During the course you will be encouraged to ask questions and explore a variety of topics. At the end of the course you will have produced a wearable outfit or household item of your own choice.
Are there specific requirements for joining?
Some experience of using a sewing machine is desirable.
How will I learn?
You will learn from practical exercises, producing samples and class discussion, one to one help, and creating items of your choice..
How will I know that I am making progress?
You are encouraged to keep a folder of any samples and notes you make. The tutor will take some photos of work in progress and you may like to take some of your own as an aid to memory. You will be given feedback on how you are getting on and you will have your finished products to look at.
Will there be homework? If so how much/how many hours?
Some sewing will be needed at home to produce a garment or other complex item within the time scale.
Will there be additional costs?
Sewing patterns (which range in price from £2.75 to £15) and fabric and notions.
Do I need specific equipment or clothes?
A sewing machine (ideally PAT tested) although we can use the ones provided in the room, pins, scissors, tape measure. A note book and pen will be useful.
Parking & Venue Information
The school is located on Appleby Road, near to Morrisons Car parking is available in the school grounds out of school hours. The textiles room is in the art block. Walk between the building containing the main reception area (upper school) and the building to its right (lower school). Once past the lower school you will see the art block across the yard on your right.
