Course programme

Course review:

A one day course suitable for novices as well as those more familiar with working with Art Clay Silver (ACS) or Precious Metal Clay (PMC). The course normally lasts for about 6 hours and will introduce you to all the basics of basics of handling the clay. You will learn two different ways to reproduce fingerprints in metal clay, techniques for adding lettering and gemstones to your pieces and how to achieve a professional finish.

Students learn from where the silver is sourced and about how silver clay is made. The different forms are described together with their uses, with many examples being available for students to view. Students are taught how to handle the clay, how to store it, how to reconstitute and recycle it and how to conserve as much of the material as possible.

Pre-finishing techniques and their importance are demonstrated before students make and prepare their own pieces for firing.

Techniques covered include decoration using syringe clay and engraving, fire-in-place gemstone setting and precision hole-drilling. All students learn how to fire using a gas hob.

After firing their piece students learn how to finish and polish their pieces, in particular how to achieve a bright finish with a burnisher. All materials are included and a comprehensive, bound set of course notes are given to each student for them to keep.
