This course will show you how to reclaim your cast offs by unpicking, cutting up and reconstructing them to produce entirely new products.Ideas for designs will be developed directly on the stand through de-construction, reconstruction, draping and piecing together methods. You will record design development ideas through you own personal photography and sketches. Surface print through screen-printing and heat transfer methods will be explored alongside textile manipulation techniques to add exquisite surface embellishment. The final week will focus on you developing a personal project with tutor support that brings together all the skills and techniques learnt on the course.

About this course
- Demonstrate an understanding of the fashion design process from beginning through to final conclusion.- Produce new and creative designs demonstrating an understanding garment construction and reconstruction processes- Use a range of fabric manipulation methods and textile surface techniques to help you generate innovative and creative fashion garments and/or accessories.
You will need to source a variety of existing garments and fabrics; worn or unused it does not matter as long as they are not new.No less than 2 garment types to allow for greater design possibilities, one of these should be a striped men’s shirt. Fabric types can range from knitwear to leather, prints to plain. Garment choices can range from jackets, denim jeans to dresses, an endless range of options, the choice is yours!
You will be taught through presentations, demonstrations, one to one support and group crits. You will be asked to continue developing work at home.

Course programme
This 3 week Saturday course will give you the skills and inspiration to produce original designs for fashion and textiles. We will look briefly at ‘slow’ fashion and the work of others for inspiration. You will explore a range of simple customisation techniques that reuse original features through to developing complex reconstruction ideas. Various fabric manipulation methods will be covered including patchwork, draping, flounces, lace inserts, pleating, folding, gathering, lace making, applique, hand and machine stitch. You will be taught design skills to help you develop ideas through drawing, written annotation and photography. Students will be encouraged to keep an on-going file of handouts, processes taught and work produced. Textile embellishing and surface decoration ideas will be explored from uncomplicated applications to more ambitious techniques to produce creative, amazing, one-off transformations.
