This module is designed to benefit professionals working across all healthcare settings, whether in clinical, educational or managerial roles.The module offers a systematic clinical framework for providing quality care to users of health services. It will allow you to understand the nature and purpose of clinical governance, which places the position of the patient at the heart of service provision.The aim of this module is to take you through a journey which will assist your understanding of Clinical Governance. The main thrust of the course examines the kind of values that underline clinical governance and the components that comprise this clinical initiative.The module also considers the larger legal, political and organisational framework within which the governance of clinical quality sits. Throughout the module, you will be given the opportunity to observe and consider how you might put into practice various quality improvement activities within your own clinical microsystem.The module is delivered entirely online and uses learning activities that include discussions, investigations, readings and practical tasks. Interactions with other students and the module e-tutor take place via asynchronous online forums and synchronous chat facilities.The module discusses the legal, social and political context that has given rise to the setting up of clinical governance as a strategy to improve the quality of health care. The key focus is on the principles, values and components of clinical governance.You will be directed to consider how the quality and safety of care are linked to the precepts of clinical governance. The practical implications of risk and error awareness are fully considered. This module can be taken as part of the BSc Nursing Studies top up degree. If you wish to complete a top-up degree, please apply directly on the Nursing Studies programme webpage. If you would still like to complete this module as a CPPD student but would like to complete a top-up degree at a later date, please note that you will only be able to transfer a maximum of 30 credits which have been awarded within 5 years prior to the start date of the programme (top-up degree). Entry requirements for BSc Health Sciences (online) programme:

  • 120 Level 4 credit points and 120 Level 5 credit points in healthcare-related subjects

Entry requirements for study as a stand-alone module:

  • Current registration with a professional and regulatory body (healthcare).
English Requirements

For those students whose first language is not English one of the following qualifications is also required:

  • IELTS: 7.0
