Windows 10 is the most powerful operating system that Microsoft has ever made, but it's also the most complex. This course will help you get to grips with its new features and enable you to make the most of its features such as the Cortana voice assistant, Edge browser and multiple desktops. You will focus on the different menus including the Start menu and the learn about the desktop environment and how it differs from previous versions of Windows. You will learn how to customise Windows 10 – for example by adding keyboard shortcuts – and change settings. You will focus on and learn how to make the most of the ‘tiles’ system and the different apps. We will look at how to pin items to the start menu and taskbar, how to use file explorer and how to manage your files and folders as well as search and view your drives and files. You will learn how to make the most of Cortana, Windows 10's built-in digital assistant and how it can help you gather important information, manage your schedule, send messages, ring your phone and more. We will also look at Edge, the default Microsoft browser, and practise common actions like blocking pop-ups, managing favourites and sending web notes. Finally, we will focus on security issues such as protecting your passwords and also troubleshooting any issues.

About this course

• customise Windows 10 – for example by adding keyboard shortcuts – and change settings
• make the most of the ‘tiles’ system and the different apps
• pin items to the start menu and taskbar
• use file explorer and manage your files and folders as well as search and view your drives and files
• make the most of Cortana, Windows 10's built-in digital assistant, and use it to gather important information, manage your schedule, send messages, ring your phone
• use Edge, the default Microsoft browser, to complete common actions such as blocking pop-ups, managing favourites and sending web notes
• use Window 10’s security elements – for example to protect your passwords
• troubleshoot a variety of issues.

Please also bring a folder, pens and paper. There are no additional costs.

This will be a practical hands-on course. You will be encouraged to practise as much as possible. An interactive whiteboard will help make demonstrations easy to understand. It will be a relaxed learning environment and step by step learning will help you become more skilled. You will have lots of opportunities to ask questions and address areas you need help in. Each student has their own computer. You will receive regular handouts and information via Google classroom so you can practise at home.

This course is part of our general digital skills programme. There are a number of courses you could do either at the same time or after this course.
