Course programme

This course aims at preparing those who have aspirations to become a manager for the different challenges that they may face in this role. Completing this course will be a good step towards adding the additional credentials needed for a promotion or appointment as a first time manager or supervisor.

The course details the results that successful managers at different levels of business must deliver within their organisations. It addresses topical and future management issues through both classic and contemporary management thought. In addition to placing management in context, the module also explores the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of managers to perform the management functions of planning, organising, and leading in an unpredictable and changing business environment. The focus of this module is a practical application of management and leadership techniques, combined with critical people management competencies to ensure that effective and efficient behaviours are utilized to improve management and leadership within a work environment and in so doing, improve performance within the work environment.

OUTCOMES

During the course of this programme, students will:

  • Demonstrate and understanding of the nature of management, with emphasis on levels and types of management, how management theory has evolved, and how to manage in a changing environment.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of planning as key management function; the nature, types and process thereof; and the utilisation of planning tools.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of organising as key management function, with reference to organisational- and job design, authority and delegation, and change and diversity.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of leading as key management function; the nature thereof and how it applies to individuals and teams, and communication and interpersonal relations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of controlling as key management function, its process, areas of application, and levels thereof
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ethics, social responsibility and corporate governance as contemporary management issues.
