Managing Safety in the Burial Process

This 3 day course is recommended for all staff whose duties will involve the excavation of graves in the cemetery or burial ground. Ideal for staff who are new to the job role, the training will cover the basic principles involved in the preparation for and the safe excavation of graves, including practical issues and the use of correct documentation. It will also provide a basic grounding on health and safety and the understanding of the use and value of good risk assessment procedures. It should be noted that this workshop will assess the competence of cemetery operatives, staff who cannot demonstrate the necessary competencies will not be awarded a certificate. It is expected that the training is held on the client’s site using equipment that may already be available. (A recommended list is available should it be required). Extra or alternative equipment can be arranged to request.

Areas Covered:

· Risk assessment

· Grave identification

· Importance of correct marking out and verification of depth and size

· Ensuring a safe site for the excavation and burial process$

· Inspection and safe use of equipment

· Assessment of ground conditions and use of correct shoring techniques

· Safety in the excavation process – use of at least 1type of shoring system

· Preparation for interment

· Effective backfilling

· Leaving the grave safe and tidy

· Legal requirements and implications

· Dealing with the Bereaved, Funeral Directors and Clergy

· Problem solving and identification of errors
