About this course

The underlying aim of this course is to help you to understand how to carry out manual handling tasks with the minimum risk of injury.

On completion of the course you should:

1. Have an understanding of the injuries that can arise from carrying out lifting and moving tasks incorrectly;
know about the legal requirements relating to manual handling and the use of equipment and how they are applied to minimise the risk of injury;
2. Understand the mechanical forces affecting the body when lifting;
3. Know about good lifting and moving techniques;
have an understanding of the approach to be taken when handling and moving people, including bariatrics;
4. Be aware of the benefits derived from good handling procedure, the use of appropriate equipment and efficient room layout by means of ergonomic design;
5. Know about sources of information and further advice.

Module 1: Course Content- Setting out the aims of the course, Identifying the qualifying units for manual handling training that contribute to a level 2 Health and Social Care Diploma, Defining Manual Handling, and looking at government statistics for injuries caused by incorrect manual handling

Module 2: Course Content- Considering the range of injuries that can arise from incorrect manual handling

Module 3:Course Content- Legal requirements relating to manual handling, Studying the process for assessing the risk of injury

Module 4: Course Content- Studying the forces affecting the body when lifting or pushing and pulling - the biomechanics of manual handling, Setting out the best way to lift or push and pull using biomechanical principles, Setting out sensible lifting limits; and discussing the points to consider when a team of people carry out manual handling activities and considering the environment around you when performing a manual handling operation

Module 5: Course Content- Requirements for handling and moving people, Considering the special handling needs of bariatric people, Discuss ‘Agreed Ways of Working’, the Care Plan, Updating a Care Plan, Discuss how to prevent and handle falls and Hoist Skills


Module 6: Course Content- Ergonomic approach to manual handling, improving the efficiency of safe manual handling, Legal requirements for using equipment and lifting devices and Good practice for controlling infection when manual handling
