Course programme

MA in Maritime Archaeology and History

Mode:
part-time

This programme combines a sound historical and theoretical introduction to maritime archaeology through lectures, seminars, site visits and practical experience. Individual units familiarise students with archaeological investigations, interpretation and management of maritime heritage sites while emphasising interdisciplinary approaches and current debate.

The University is situated within walking distance of the Floating Harbour at Bristol, one of England's most historic ports. The city rose to international prominence during the medieval period, and was a key location in the development of the Atlantic world during the 17th and 18th centuries. Beyond Bristol, the harbours, wrecks, preserved ships and maritime museums of south west England provide a rich focus for teaching and field experience, from the prehistoric and Romano-British periods through to the 20th century.

Programme Structure

You must obtain 180 credit points, of which 120 are from five compulsory taught units and 60 from a dissertation. All units are assessed by means of coursework comprising essays, student seminars/short presentations and the dissertation of about 15,000 words. There are no examinations. Teaching finishes in April/May allowing time for research and dissertation writing.
