Mezzotint is an exciting if exacting method of intaglio printing known for achieving the richest of velvety blacks and the most delicate soft greys. It is particularly suited to dramatic images featuring lights and darks. This course will include an artist's talk and demonstrations but give you the opportunity create your own work. You will be part of a small group learning about mezzotint printing and get to use the essential tools required for the medium. You will create your own plates using the aquatint method of mezzotint and print them on good quality paper.

Please bring source material with a good range of tone and contrast, these could be drawings, sketchbooks or photographs.

There will be a talk and demonstrations at each stage. Technical information will be supported with handouts and throughout the sessions you will be guided by your tutor.
There is no requirement to complete work outside of the class however please bring along a variety of source material ie drawings or photographs and the tutor will discuss the most suitable for the process.

Course programme
You will be given an overview of mezzotint printing past and present and you will be able to look at examples of the tutor's own mezzotint prints.
There will be a demonstration of how to prepare a mezzotint plate using a mezzotint rocker and you will have the opportunity to try your hand at this.
The metal plates you will use to create your images will be surfaced, by you, using a traditional aquatint process and you will develop your image using the mezzotint scrapers and burnishers.
You will also learn how to print your plate to exploit the lights and darks you have created.
