If you work in engineering and want to develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of materials such as metals, polymers, ceramics or composites this short part-time module (part of the HNC/D in engineering) will provide you with the necessary background knowledge and understanding of the properties, testing, treatments, processing, selection, failure modes and prevention of a variety of engineering materials. You will have the opportunity to explore and analyse environmental issues related to increased productivity and sustainability that lead to less waste and to the more efficient use of energy and resources when selecting materials for particular applications.

About this course

As this module is part of an HNC/D qualification, you are required to be over 18 years of age and have the following qualifications: Two A Levels – preferably in maths or science OR BTec certificate or diploma in engineering or a related discipline - Mature students will be considered in light of relevant work/life experience - Non-EU students are required to have an IELTS or equivalent university qualification

Completion of the course will enable you to: Determine the properties and selection criteria of materials from tests and data sources Understand the relationships between manufacturing processes and material behaviour Select suitable materials and processing methods for a specific product Understand the in-service causes of failure of engineering materials What skills will I gain? Throughout the course you will develop skills in: Identifying microstructures Testing different materials Detecting and determining defects Considering environmental issues related to increased productivity and sustainability that lead to less waste More efficient use of energy and resources when selecting materials for particular applications How will I be assessed? This is an assignment-based course and there are no exams. You will be continually assessed throughout the course via assignments and the production of a detailed portfolio What can I do next? Completion of the module will enable you to: Use the skills you have gained in the workplace Continue with further study and progress to the HNC/D in engineering
