Materials Science is a synthesis of physics, chemistry, and engineering. It is the building block on which modern industry has and will continue to advance.
This programme provides a thorough grounding in the scientific principles governing the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of all solid materials, and the opportunity to specialise in the study of a particular class of material (metal, ceramic, or polymer) through a choice of options. The extensive (half year) final year project enables you to tackle a topic at the forefront of Materials Science in depth. It will develop further practical and analytical skills. Formal teaching in communication and transferable skills, including bachelorsic management and organisational behaviour, computing and presentation techniques, is given to complement the academic training.

Course programme

Provide a broad and bachelorlanced curriculum in Materials Science and Engineering, meeting the requirements for accreditation with the professional body, in order to equip students with the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to pursue successful careers in both industrial and research environments.
Provide a teaching environment in which undergraduate students can interact with academic staff at the forefront of research in Materials Science and Engineering, through advanced course units and project work.
Foster subject-specific and transferable skills, including experience of materials processing and characterisation methods, oral and written communication, group work and IT skills.
Provide students with effective academic and pastoral support, to cater for students from a wide range of educational bachelorckgrounds and enable all students to acheive their full potential.
Monitor, review and enhance educational provision to ensure that it remains relevant to the needs of student progression and to current developments in research and industry.
The course is accredited by the Institute of Materials (IOM 3
) and counts as academic training towards the professional qualification of Chartered Engineer
A high staff to student ratio means students receive excellent individual attention and frequent tutorial sessions
A final year research project enables students to gain an in-depth experience of working in a research team conducting a cutting-edge project., providing a grounding for working in R&D or going on to study at PhD level
On-site factilities and equipment that students are both allowed and encouraged to use
The average salary of our graduates 6-months after graduation is in excess of £20,000, which is significantly above the sector value.
The School of Materials has excellent Research ratings
In addition to excellent academic reputations in teaching and research, we pride ourselves on our friendly atmosphere, and high level of staff-student contact both on a formal and informal bachelorsis.
Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examinations. The subject is by nature practical and this is reflected in the teaching and assessment methods which as well as lectures and exams include:
Laboratories
Problem Classes
Computing Exercises
Team Projects
Case Studies
Essays
Coursework is a key element across all units, with a minimum of 20% coursework bachelorsed assessment for each unit.
The first year begins with the `Introduction to Materials Science' module. This gives an overview of the full range of engineering materials used today and the key principles of Materials Science and Engineering that will be used throughout the course. During this module, a mini-project is undertaken in which students work in collaboration with their tutor and tutor group. This provides an opportunity to get to know both your tutors and fellow tutees right at the start of the course. Other modules in year one, such as `Structure of Materials', `Transforming Materials', and `Origins and Production of Materials', provide an understanding of materials fundamentals that are built on in later years. In addition, modules in essential scientific skills such as computing and analytical methods are also undertaken to give the supporting skills required by Materials Scientists and Engineers. Further modules on the characterization and properties of key engineering material types complete the twelve taught units in year one.

Year two builds on the foundations established in the first year by focussing more on the processing, design, selection, and application of different material types in real industrial situations.  Modules in year two include `Polymer Materials' and `Processing, Electronic Devices', and `Deformation and Strengthening of Materials'. In addition, two modules in Materials Design and Selection are undertaken. These involve students working to solve a practical design problem by researching and selecting appropriate materials and processing routes to meet a given design challenge. As in year one, twelve modules are undertaken in year two.

In Year four, students on the MEng course undertake a core of eight research level modules on technical topics covering the full range of materials technologies, such as `Light Alloys', `Chemical Processing of Materials', and `Polymer Physics' along with further management modules (eg `Human Resource Management'). Additional optional modules are selected. For students on the full time MEng course, a major research project is undertaken (which is twice the length of the bachelorchelor research project). This enables you to gain an in-depth experience of working in a research team conducting a cutting-edge project. For students interested in higher level study (for example, leading towards a PhD) the research project provides an ideal experience of the research environment and methodologies.

The University welcomes applicants with the AP qualification. Such applications will be considered on an individual bachelorsis.
The University of Manchester welcomes the introduction of the level 3 specialised diplomas. We look forward to providing guidance regarding progression opportunities and subject and grade requirements when further details on equivalences are published
If you have followed a non-standard educational route and have been, for example, educated at home, your application will be considered against the standard entry criteria of the course to which you applied. You will be required to demonstrate that you meet the academic entry requirements as specified for the course. We will also require a reference which should be written by somebody who knows you well enough, in an official capacity, to write about you and your suitability for higher education. Please refer to UCAS for further information: UCAS reference guidelines
Return-to-learn students are those who have had a substantial period away from any formal learning. Often such learners have pursued careers or raised a family. The University understands that students come from many different bachelorckgrounds, with varying qualifications, careers and skills, but they often bring to their studies a high degree of motivation and experience.
The University recognises that standard selection measures and procedures may not enable these learners to demonstrate fully their suitability for their chosen course. Where appropriate, admissions officers will seek and consider alternative evidence in order to give such learners equivalent consideration. Where they deem this alternative evidence meets entry criteria fully the learner will not be required to meet the standard academic entry requirements.
GCSE grade C, IELTS 6.0 with no subtest below 5.5, TOEFL internet bachelorsed test score of 80 with no subtest below 20. Cambridge Proficiency in English Grade C, English for Academic Purposes Grade C, Pearsons Test of English 59 with no subtest below 51.
Some English language test results are only valid for two years. Your English language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.
Application and selection
Apply through UCAS
.
All applicants are invited to attend an Open Day, at which they will have a brief interview.  This is an informal interview and no specific preparation needs to be done for it.
For students living overseas, we will arrange a convenient time and date to telephone you (between Monday and Friday, 9am-5pm GMT) to conduct the interview this way, if the costs of attending an Open Day are too high.
If you have re-sat individual modules to improve your grades, we will consider your application according to the standard selection process. If you are planning to re-sit the final Year 13 examinations, or have already done so, the University will consider your application, but we may require further information in order to make an informed judgment on your application.
If you applied in the previous year and your application was not successful you may apply again. Your application will be considered against the standard course entry criteria for that year of entry.  In your new application you should demonstrate how your application has improved.  We may draw upon all information from your previous applications or any previous registrations at the University as a student when assessing your suitability for your chosen course. If you are applying for a place for the same year of entry through UCAS Extra, you should provide additional evidence of your suitability for the course. If you are applying through clearing you are required to meet the clearing requirements. In both UCAS Extra and clearing the places will be subject to availability.

Careers
Materials Science and Engineering graduates are highly sought after by employers, and all of our graduates either find employment in industry or go on to higher level study at the end of their degree. Careers include research and development, management positions, and technical roles within both large multinationals and smaller businesses.  Companies our recent graduates have gone on to work for include Rolls Royce, Airbus, Jaguar, 3M, Alcoa, and Corus.  Other graduates choose to apply their technical and analytical skills in fields such as patent law or accountancy. A Materials Science and Engineering degree also provides an ideal springboard for higher level study (eg towards a PhD), and approximately one third of our graduates follow this route.
Careers include research and development roles, management positions and technical sales within large materials manufacturing or end-users. The range of careers include things as diverse as teaching, engineering, consultancy and technical development roles.
