Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) is a new qualification designed for students who have achieved a grade C or above at GCSE. It helps to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking and supports courses such as A-level Psychology, Sciences and Geography as well as technical and vocational qualifications. The course is taught in the Science and Mathematics Area of the college, which is staffed by highly talented, qualified and motivated lecturers.

What you need to know
How will I study?

The course has two strands, one Maths and the other Statistics. The Maths side of the course covers topics including: Personal Finance - loan repayments, calculating income tax and National Insurance The Statistics side of the course covers: Representation of data - types of graph etc The Normal Distribution Correlation and Regression In addition to this there is training in Fermi questions. An example of a Fermi question is "How many piano tuners are there in Chicago?". The student is expected to make a series of reasonable assumptions, and come up with an estimate. Critical thinking: This important skill helps learners to judge the validity or otherwise of everyday information.
How will I be taught?

The course is taught by very enthusiastic and interactive staff, who test learning by practicing exam type questions from the start. Students are also periodically given mock type exams, so that that they can monitor their own progress, and focus on areas of weakness.
How will I be assessed?

This one year course culminates in two 1 1/2 hour exams.
