The AS course comprises of three modules, two of which are followed by all students; Core 1 and Core 2. The third module is an application of maths, usually this will be Mechanics 1 if you are also studying Physics, or Decision 1; Statistics is another application studied by some students during their two year A level. The second year follows a similar structure.

What you need to know
How will I study?

Core 1 and 2 (plus 3 and 4 in year 2) concern the study of algebra; you will look at functions and graphs including trigonometric functions and will learn about calculus - the study of rates of change. Mechanics is about the study of forces and motion. Decision looks at the mathematical processes by which businesses can make decisions that maximise their efficiency. Statistics explores the question as to how we can decide whether a theory is true given the random nature of the world.
How will I be taught?

A variety of approaches are used. There will be participatory lecturing – new ideas need clear explanation from an expert, but lectures will always incorporate a lot of student involvement. Investigation – sometimes you will explore a problem to deepen your conceptual understanding. Problem solving group exercises – discussing Maths helps to gain a secure grasp of the subject. and practice questions Support sessions are available for students who are finding a topic especially challenging
How will I be assessed?

Assessment is via 3 terminal exams each year, one for each module studied.
