Description:
This course, comprising six modules, involves the study of pure mathematics, and either mechanics or statistics. Pure mathematics (four units) is an extension of GCSE topics together with the introduction of new fundamental ideas such as calculus. Mechanics (two units) is concerned with the dynamics of real life events, such as the motion of a projectile and the statics of real life events, such as the equilibrium of a body under the action of parallel forces. Statistics (two units) is also concerned with real-life events involving discrete and continuous distributions, such as the Poisson and normal distributions. Emphasis is placed on the application of theory to practical problems. It may be possible to study a combination of the mechanics and statistics modules.
