Expert mentoring and supervision is provided by internationally-recognised professor-level senior consultants who are members of the University’s Clinical Medicine Research Centre (CMRC) within the School of Medicine and Clinical Practice (SMCP).

About this course

This course aims to provide advanced clinical research skills and training to assist the students in pursuing their career in medicine and to enhance their patient-care in a manner that is informed by an in-depth understanding of the research evidence underpinning their chosen speciality. You will undertake a two year research project and produce a thesis which is examined in a viva in the same way as for a PhD. You will be encouraged to discuss your research plans with a mentor in your specialism and will then be assigned supervisors in the field.

Course programme

The new School of Medicine and Clinical Practice at the University of Wolverhampton provides and excellent environment for undertaking clinical and science laboratory-based research under the mentorship of internationally-recognised supervisors.


The course enhances the research skills of medical practitioners and provides important opportunities to further their ability to bring research into improving their patient care.

2019 Entry

A UK recognised medical qualification e.g. MBChB, MBBS.

Registration with the GMC of the UK.

A minimum of two years clinical practice following GMC registration, with an additional year in specialist practice

Non-native speakers will be required to hold IELTS with an overall band score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each element.

In Addition

Candidates will be required to have the support of their hospital/practice employers for the duration of the programme and to have an appropriate contract allowing the time required for the research.

Candidates will submit a preliminary proposal, developed in conjunction with a senior advisor with an appropriate track record of research, and have it approved before commencing their research.

Before applying, you should consider carefully how you will finance your studies for the duration of your programme, including tuition fees, research support fees and living costs.


Government loans (Home Fee Status):

Government loans are available for postgraduate research students of up to £27,265, to cover fees and living expenses. More information can be found at Doctoral-loans website.

For 2021/22 new entrants, EU, other EEA and Swiss nationals will no longer be eligible for home fee status and financial support from Student Finance England.


Self-funded:

We are able to take payments in instalments, to spread out the cost of your studies, and it is possible to switch between full-time and part-time modes of study. For more information go to How to pay.


Postgraduate Research Loyalty Discount:

To students progressing from an undergraduate programme and/or a taught postgraduate programme to a postgraduate research programme, where both courses are University of Wolverhampton Awards.

There is no time limit on how long ago you completed your degree and/or Masters level qualification, as long as the new award is at a higher level.
