Media Studies complements a variety of subjects and potential progression routes. As well as gaining an informed understanding of Media texts and their contexts, students will also develop practical skills using the Mac suite.

About this course

Communication, interpretation, teamwork, project management, technical skills.

Students progress to a variety of degree courses and a range of HE institutions for both single and joint honours . This course will also give you a show reel, created using industry standard software (Adobe Premiere Pro/Photoshop) for when applying for Media Production courses/ work experience/apprenticeships.

BTEC: 5 E Grades or above at GCSE or an appropriate Level 1 qualifcation and prior experience of media or photography education or a portfolio of still or moving images AS/A2: As for all advanced courses

Course programme

You will study and be assessed on the following three components, over a two-year period:

COMPONENT 1: MEDIA PRODUCTS, INDUSTRIES AND AUDIENCES

(30% of qualification)

  • Written examination: 2 hours, 15 mins
  • The examination assesses media language, representation, media industries, audiences and media contexts. It consists of two sections: Section A: Analysing Media Language and Representation, Section B: Understanding Media Industries and Audiences
COMPONENT 2: MEDIA FORMS & PRODUCTS

(40% of qualification)

  • Written examination: 2 hours, 30 mins
  • The examination assesses media language, representation, media industries, audiences and media contexts. It consists of two sections: Section A: Analysing Media Language and Representation, Section B: Understanding Media Industries and Audiences
COMPONENT 3: PRODUCTION COURSEWORK

(30% of qualification)

  • Students will create two media products from the following media forms: Television, magazine, film marketing, music marketing and online options. Students will apply their knowledge and understanding of how texts are constructed for specific meaning and audiences.

Additional information

An annual highlight is the Cosmat Conference, organised by Varndean staff for A Level students from all over Sussex, which invites leading filmmakers such as Ben Wheatley (Sightseers/ Free Fire/High Rise) to show and discuss their work. There are guest speakers leading sessions on scriptwriting eg Jenny Lecoat (Another Mother’s Son). Cinema visits included a special screening of I, Daniel Blake with a director’s Q&A. Further plans include guest speakers from Radio and TV.
