Designed for experienced clinical professionals who have responsibility for education and training, the Medical Education programme covers the principles and methods of teaching and learning and their application to healthcare. The programme provides you with the skills needed to plan and deliver successful teaching and learning sessions
Its flexible, modular structure allows you to study over a period and to a level suited to your own professional needs and circumstances.

Taught by experienced clinicians and leading academics in the field of medical education, this course will enhance your knowledge and skills as an educator and give you the confidence to apply them in your own professional practice.

Elements of the course are accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA). The first module, 'Essentials of Clinical Education', is accredited against Descriptor 1 (Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, AFHEA) and the Postgraduate Certificate is accredited against Descriptor 2 (Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, FHEA).

About this course

This course is designed for clinicians and health professionals who are involved in the delivery of medical education at either undergraduate or postgraduate level.

All candidates must satisfy the Board of Graduate Studies’ requirements for entry. All candidates must have experience in teaching and be currently actively involved in teaching activities. Candidates will be educated to first degree level and normally be healthcare professionals.

Applicants for research degree modules should normally possess a first degree of at least upper second class honours standard or the equivalent and/or a Masters degree or its equivalent.

Course programme

You can take the Masters in Medical Education on a part-time basis over a period of three years. Based on modular learning, it gives you the opportunity to progress from Certificate to Diploma to a full Masters degree (MMedEd). If you do not wish to study to Masters level, you can stop at either the Certificate or the Diploma stage, obtaining valuable qualifications that will greatly enhance your skills and knowledge.

  • Becoming an Effective Teacher
  • Assessment in Clinical Education
  • In addition you will complete the Postgraduate Induction and Professional Development module.
Diploma stage: Certificate stage modules plus the modules below in the following order:
  • Evidence and Values in Clinical Education
  • Research Methods in Clinical Education
  • One optional module from the list below
Masters stage: Diploma stage modules plus:
  • Professional Project plus one optional module from the list below, OR
  • Dissertation
Optional Modules:
  • Healthcare Ethics
  • Introduction to Management in Health Service Organisations
  • Learning Technologies in Healthcare Education
Teaching methods:

Each module is organised as a five-day intensive study block. You will be taught through lectures and seminars. In addition to intensive face-to-face teaching, the foundation module also features online learning, including resource-based teaching and online discussion.

Assessments:

Each module is assesssed by a 4,000 word written assignment. The first two assignments include a reflective teaching portfolio. The Professional Project is assessed by 4,000 word project report, an oral presentation and poster presentation.
