You will gain fluency in translating Medieval Latin and recognise its main linguistic features.
Whole class work; translation at a gentle pace; tutor posing questions and answering questions raised by the students. General discussion on language, style, main topics, etc. Students will be asked to prepare a passage for each class. Homework: about 2-3 hours per week.

Course programme

We will translate and discuss historical, theological, philosophical and poetical passages written in Latin in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. We shall be using the book Reading Medieval Latin by Keith Sidwell, starting around Section 13 (please check with the tutor through the Classical Languages and Civilisations Department for the exact point to start at).

We will use the following book: Reading Medieval Latin, ed. By Keith Sidwell (Cambridge University Press, 1995).
