Why study BSc Mental Health Nursing (Professional Practice) (Top-up) at Middlesex University?
This one year top-up course is designed for qualified and registered mental health nurses with a DipAdvanced, CertHE or DipHE qualification (who have engaged in credited CPD studies following qualification), to gain an undergraduate degree. The topics studied are broad and will equip already practising nurses the underpinning knowledge to expand their skills, their practice and career opportunities.
As a qualified mental health nurse in practice you will have the opportunity to study clinical and/or professional practice-related inquiry methods in order to engage in clinical and/or healthcare practice and/or organisational development.
Please note, this course does not offer professional registration within nursing in the UK, and we cannot accept students who require a Tier 4 visa.

How to apply
Qualifications
Students admitted to this programme must be a:
UK Registered Nurse with sufficient credits to meet the entry criteria of 300 credits, of which 60 must be at Level 6. These credits will be pre-accredited onto the degree pathway.
Eligibility
UK/EU and international students are eligible to apply for this course. However, we will not be able to support international students who require a Tier 4 Student Visa.

Course content

What will you study on the BSc Mental Health Nursing (Professional Practice) (Top-up)?

This course will cover the various facets of nurses roles including:

As well as developing your critical thinking and decision making, you will also gain the ability to reflect and analyse your own performance. You will have research analysis and evaluating skills and will focus on the facilitation of learning and communication to a range of audiences including students, peers and clients.

Modules

Professional Practice Enquiry (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module is designed to develop your practitioner skills in inquiry methodologies in order to design a work based project that has the potential to improve your own practice. It will explore approaches to practitioner inquiry methods appropriate for your area of practice and enable reflection upon your position as a practitioner inquirer and the potential ethical implications that could arise during the project.

Negotiated Work Based Learning Project (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to provide the opportunity to develop projects that are designed to improve or inform areas of your own or others’ clinical or professional practice in nursing and healthcare. You will explore and critically discuss your work/practice and demonstrate the learning gained, as well as the development of your professional/clinical knowledge and skills. The learning will be located within your own localised and specialised work/practice area.

You can find more information about this course in the programme specification. Optional modules are usually available at levels 5 and 6, although optional modules are not offered on every course. Where optional modules are available, you will be asked to make your choice during the previous academic year. If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.
