This is a BSc-(Hons) top up, therefore students enter at Level 6 only (final year of a BSc).

Overview
The course will give you a comprehensive insight into various aspects of substance use and misuse ranging from:
alcohol and drug effects
psychopharmacology
the historical and cultural context of drug use and misuse
models of dependence
drug and alcohol policies
harm reduction interventions to reduce blood born viruses
evidence based treatment interventions for substance misuse and dual diagnosis (risk assessment and risk management, policies, interventions and current research in dual diagnosis).

We aim at bridging the gap between theory, research and practice. The course has a strong applied focus and keeps on-going links with the field. Teaching includes a variety of strategies, including on-line activities, theatre techniques, group discussions and interactive tasks.

A range of guest speakers contribute to the sessions, ranging from researchers, service users and practitioners; most importantly, during the course you will have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas practitioners working in a variety of sectors.

The overall aim is to offer a course which is current and relevant for practitioners working in contact with clients with substance misuse problems. The modules are designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, whilst maintaining a high academic standard.

The course is affiliated with the Federation of Drug and Alcohol Services and is mapped against the Drug and Alcohol Occupational Standards.

Career and study progression
This degree will prepare you for a career specialising in substance misuse preparing you for roles in a variety of sectors: for example mental health services, drug treatment services, homeless services, midwifery, youth services.

Entry requirements
240 credits in a relevant discipline (eg: Mental health Nursing, Counselling, Social Work).
Students without the above qualifications who have relevant work experience are invited to apply. Such applications will be considered on an individual basis and may be required to attend an interview.
International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).

Course detail
This course (or the individual modules/CPDs) is suitable for professionals working in mainstream services who want to enhance their knowledge in substance misuse. In fact, it is recognised that any practitioner working in a health and social sector (GPs, nurses, midwives, social workers, psychologists, and school teachers) should be able to identify individuals who directly or indirectly suffer the consequences of substance misuse and refer/collaborate with the appropriate services.

In order to complete the degree you need to take 4 20 credits module and a Double Dissertation module (40 credits). The BSc is affiliated with the Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals and all modules are mapped against the Drug and Alcohol Professional Standards.

Advanced Substance Use and Misuse in Context (20 credits)
In the first part of the module we will explore historical, social and cultural aspects of substance misuse and how drug use has influenced music, literature and art. In the second part covers psychopharmacology and the effects of psychoactive substances on the human brain and body functions. Finally, we will look at how biological and psychosocial models answer two fundamental questions: 'What is addiction and why do some people become addicted to substances?'

Advanced Substance Misuse Treatment Interventions, (20 credits)
The aim of this module is to provide an overview of substance misuse assessment tools and treatment interventions, including Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness based Relapse Prevention, CBT, AA/self-help groups, and Family Interventions. You will have the opportunity to meet professionals who work in the field of addiction and to listen to the experience of people who successfully recovered from addition. Teaching strategies will include presentations, group discussions and activities in class.

Advanced Communicable Diseases (HIV, HBV, HCV, TB), Substance Misuse and Health Behaviour: Interventions and Policies (20 credits)
This module aims to develop learners’ knowledge and understanding in relation to communicable diseases (HIV, Hepatitis B and C and Tuberculosis). By the end of the course learners will be able to implement evidence-based interventions to reduce the risk of contracting and transmitting communicable diseases in the drug using population.

Learners will enhance their knowledge on public health policies, harm reduction interventions and theories of behaviour change. Interactive strategies (eg: drama) will be used to improve communication skills, especially with regards to discussing safe sex with clients.

Advanced Dual Diagnosis: Exploring Interventions for People with Mental Health and Substance Misuse Problems (20 credits)
This module aims to develop learners’ knowledge and understanding in the area of dual diagnosis of mental health and substance misuse. The aim is to equip students with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to deal with clients with complex needs. Sessions will include risk assessment, risk management, care planning and record keeping. A range of professionals working in the field and service users will contribute to the module.

Double Dissertation in Substance Misuse (40 credits)
The double dissertation consists of a literature review on a substance misuse related topic of your choice.
