The microbiologist is a professional specialized in the study of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses. He identifies them, analyzes them and studies their activity, their roles in nature, their interaction with other organisms and how they can be exploited for human benefit. Microbiology is a branch of biology that studies the structure and functions of microorganisms, that is, of all those single-celled, multicellular or acellular living organisms, not visible to the naked eye: this includes bacteria, archaea, some types of fungi, yeasts, algae and protozoa; microbiology also studies viruses and prions, although these are not classified as living beings in the strict sense. Microbiology remains an open and actively expanding field of study; In fact, reliable estimates indicate that only the 1% of all microorganisms present in the most varied habitats have been identified or studied, more than three centuries after the birth of microbiology, [1] despite the considerable knowledge acquired so far on the study of microorganisms, especially as regards those microorganisms capable of have significant effects on humans or benign, or indispensable, or pathogenic such as bacteria responsible for diseases. The microbiologist studies the structure, activities and roles in nature of: prokaryotic microorganisms (bacteria and archaea), eukaryotic microorganisms (protozoa, fungi and algae) and viruses. He also deals with their identification, their relationships with other organisms and their use in productive activities. results of the analyzes and evaluations reached by the MICROBIOLOGIST find application: in the diagnosis of infectious diseases; in processes involving microorganisms in the industrial, agricultural, environmental and public health sectors; in the microbiological quality control of food, water, environmental matrices and drugs; in biological risk assessment.
