Description
Students of BMid (Hons) Midwifery at Swansea University graduate as highly skilled professionals with the clinical expertise and interpersonal skills to ensure a woman’s physical and emotional well-being during pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood. The programme is designed to build upon student midwives’ strengths so they become professional and motivated practitioners.
Student midwives will develop a heightened level of self-awareness and sensitivity towards women and families throughout the programme. The Midwifery and Reproductive Health team offers a broad range of experience and subject interest. In partnership with other disciplines our well established research culture supports evidence based practice.
The course develops creativity and originality of expression and the ability to analyse and make use of research. Students are also taught how to evaluate and critique research studies, so they become thoughtful and critical users of research in practice.
The learning environment is supportive but the student is expected to take responsibility for her or his personal and professional development. Graduates should become life-long learners; confident, competent and accountable for their own practice as a midwife, meeting the challenges of contemporary practice.
Many team members are engaged in research and pass their learning on to students, opportunities exist at the College of Human and Health Sciences for qualified midwives to further develop skills in relation to practice, management, research and education.
Many past students have returned to take postgraduate degrees including MSc Healthcare Management and other relevant practice based learning subjects. We also offer a BSc in Contraception and Sexual Health Practice.
