Course programme
You need to have a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery to join this course, and to be a registered midwife. You’ll study part time while continuing to work in your clinical role.
The disseration is the only module on this course. It’s an opportunity to compare a current process with the guidelines and new evidence in this area to improve a service.
You’ll choose your own project, which can be based on an element of clinical practice you’d like to improve or explore an issue that your employer has identified. Your other option is to carry out a systematic literature review on a topic of your choice.
TeachingThis course is project based and predominantly involves self study. You’ll be assigned an experienced supervisor who will support you and provide feedback as you draft your dissertation and provide feedback.
You’ll have monthly meetings with your supervisor. These can be face-to-face, or via Skype or phone if you’re not based in London.
Although you may need to travel to London during your course to access the library or other facilities, all of our core texts and articles are available online.
Course purposeThis course builds on what you’ve learned during your PG Diploma in Midwifery, giving you the chance to put your skills into practice on a project you’re passionate about.
Taking the lead on your own dissertation will encourage you to think critically about a service or challenge in clinical practice and use the latest evidence to support your approach. It will prepare you for taking on more specialist roles and those with greater responsibility.
You’ll also see how the latest research from King’s leads to improvements in patient care and clinical practice, and how this feeds into your work.
AssessmentAssessment is based entirely on your dissertation. As a PG Diploma-qualified midwife, you will have two options for your project: a healthcare analysis or a literature review. Whichever you choose, you’ll write a 12,000 word dissertation.
