Course programme
Course detail Description
First, we’ll guide you through what’s normal in pregnancy and birth. Then, as you delve deeper into the course, you’ll learn about the complexities that pregnant women can face. We prepare you for emergencies so you can tackle any challenge.
Working on placement in London, you’ll be exposed to a diverse range of people and situations. Some days will be challenging, but you’ll be part of a community of midwives and professionals who will support you through the ups and downs.
Throughout your second and third year you’ll take on your own caseload. You can discover first-hand what it takes to effectively support a woman from her first months of pregnancy to birth and the postnatal period.
TeachingNo two days are the same at King’s. One day you could be listening to a guest lecturer talk about new ideas in midwifery practice, another you could be on placement supporting a woman to start breastfeeding.
From eLearning and lectures, to seminars and simulation activities, we use a blend of teaching methods to develop your understanding of midwifery practice.
At King’s, we know it’s important to bring day-to-day practice into the lecture theatre. Our lecturers are registered midwives who give an honest insight into the profession.
Course details
We develop the course around the latest research in healthcare. And it constantly evolves thanks to feedback from service users and students.
You’ll experience a broad range of subjects around midwifery. From biology to our unique arts and humanities module, this programme gives you a thorough understanding of the profession.
About half of your time will be spent learning on the job. The other half will focus on the theory behind the practice. But the two aren’t exclusive – clinical teachers come to King’s and our link lecturers will visit you on placement.
Assessment
We use a range of methods to test your understanding of child birth and midwifery practice. We’ll assess your work while you’re on placement. Sometimes we’ll ask you to complete a practical task, on other occasions you’ll sit a written exam.
