Free-hand Drawing
  • Allows students to develop their ability and creative capacity to translate plans into free-hand visual expressions. This will help them in becoming familiar with drawing tools and master drawing space effectively. Course topics include: free-hand drawing, elements of visual perception and proportions; study of shapes, volumes, lights and shadows; basic geometrical constructions, descriptive geometry, orthogonal projections and perspective; the principles of free-hand drawing from straight lines, simple shapes and volumes to rotations, permeations and explosions; the jewels: synthesis and free-hand graphical translation of jewels on the drawing paper.

Photoshop
  • Students will master the main components of the application from the analysis of the interface and commands to the processing and modification of images. The course will cover Photoshop’s main features: workspace; digital images, color settings; selections and layers, retouch and transform instruments. Course topics include: introduction to the software tools used for the design and the communication of a collection as well as the development of jewelry design techniques. Students are required to use Photoshop to carry out projects in many of their other courses.

History of Fashion and Accessories
  • The fashion world and its evolution from the second part of the 19th century to date; introduction to the most significant rudiments of history of costume from the Italian Renaissance to Napoleon; the relationships between political and social changes and costume development; the fundamental role of fashion designers and accessories designers in these changes, the capacity to translate all with their own abilities and understanding of fashion.

Art in Fashion
  • This class provides students with basic knowledge about the period from Impressionism to contemporary tendencies, focusing on the general characters of the main movements and personalities. By the end of the module, students will know the general outlines in the selected period, connecting the language of visual arts to the historical and cultural background of ideas and movements. The analysis of the techniques, structures, lines, colours and composition will enable the students to apply them to their own creations in fashion, jewellery and accessories.

History of Art
  • Students will visit places of cultural interest and connected to the periods and movements studied in Art in Fashion class.

History of Contemporary Jewelry
  • This course offers a path of jewel evolution, from the ancient times to the 19th century by analysing styles and techniques and by giving emphasis to the meaning and values they had through the different ages and societies. The main goal is to show the complexity of the sector by defining its roots and putting the jewel in relation to the social, artistic and cultural context.

Introduction to Goldsmith Lab
  • The aim of the course is to help students become familiar with the equipment of a goldsmith’s workshop and its correct use. Students will learn the safety rules and the correct behavior in the laboratory and how to use silver alloy and silver soldering properly.

Goldsmith Lab
  • This course introduces the various goldsmith techniques and the fundamental tools and equipment of a traditional jewelry lab. Students will realize jewelry objects and prototypes in order to get acquainted with the most important goldsmith techniques, including: fusing, soldering, wax modeling, texturing, tutoring on individual development, final realization of a prototype.

Design Methods
  • Through this topic students will investigate the methods of making design, through good examples of jewelry design, with particular attention to the most innovative brands. Through a learning both theoretical and practical, students get to manage their ideas and to represent them in an efficient and innovative way, by the use of images, materials handling, freehand drawings, 3D modeling, prototyping experiments, in order to achieve the management of the whole design complexity. The brief of each student will be named with only one keyword, a neologism, coined specifically to summarize the content of a particular project idea. The design exercise will concern the concept and the creation of a capsule collection of three pieces of jewelry. Through the application of the methodology and the appropriate use of knowledges, tools and visualization techniques, the student will be accompanied in a process of construction of the entire project. The double nature of the course will have as its ultimate purpose the combination between craftsmanship and use of technology, innovation and tradition, always looking at the culture of design.

Perception
  • This course explores sensory perceptions and cognitive processes, illustrating the scientific theories that explain how our senses function, and correlating those functions with research into the psychology of form.
  • Students tackle the principles of colour theory (harmonies between colours, colour matches and contrasts, complementary colours and contrasts of quality and of quantity) and, through the applied sciences, learn techniques for analysing the relationship between object, space and person.

Jewelry Design
  • This course trains students to analyse the components of a piece of jewellery by observing each detail directly and applying the techniques used to work with it. Elements of ergonomics are introduced here, in the interest of designing these objects to adapt more correctly to the human body. Exercises in graphic design enable students to work actively to acquire their first notions about the shapes of jewellery, and to conduct research into materials and the jewellery market. This study is based on the logic of acquiring knowledge gradually, paying attention to the specifics of individual market sectors, to technologies, to commercial considerations and to the client.
