Course programme

This two week intensive millinery course has been designed to cover all the key elements of 'Introduction to Millinery' and 'Millinery 2'. The course will introduce the technical skills needed for blocking and shaping straw and felt. It will also allow you to develop your understanding of design, proportion, balance and the application of colour: taking your basic millinery knowledge a stage further.


The course will include

  • An introduction to professional millinery techniques
  • How to use a range of specialist traditional equipment
  • Introduction to a range of decorative techniques and methods of professionally finishing hats
  • Measuring the head and fitting the hat
  • How to select from a wide range of woven and knitted fabrics, felts and straw and how to appropriately apply them to your designs
  • The selection and use of a variety of foundation materials
  • Introduction to the art of draping fabrics as either a trimming or for a whole hat
  • Techniques for blocking felt, straw and foundation materials thus enabling you to further develop your manipulation skills

Most students will produce 2 hats (1 felt, 1 straw) during the course, depending upon the speed with which you work.


Level:

Beginners. You should have an interest in the subject area and a desire to learn but no previous experience is required.


Booking:

Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online or via the phone using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.
