Course programme

Mixed Media Painting - Part 2 (Advanced) is for those students who have completed Mixed Media - Part 1 and want to further expand their knowledge of contemporary painting, materials. concepts and techniques.

You may need more time to experiment, wish to work on a larger scale or expand on your concepts and knowledge of materials. This course will give you the confidence and knowledge and experience to move forward with a view to exhibiting in the future.

What is this course about
You will have the opportunity to practice a range of experimental techniques depending on your sphere of interest. The focus is on using paint in a variety of ways – dripping, pouring, pooling, glazing etc as well as creating shape, texture and form through collage, masking, wax, photo transfer and resin.

Topics covered

You will have a recap of techniques from Part 1 giving you a chance to explore in more depth:
• The importance of surface preparation, painting supports, priming and canvas
• Generating painting ideas through collage and Photo transfer montage
• Understanding layering processes with acrylics paints & mediums
• Demonstrations on the chromatic value of colour through opacity, transparency and surface with the opportunity to put the techniques into practice
• Stencils processes with adhesive sheeting, masking tape and latex in order to create forms and hard edged shapes
• Demonstrations and experimentation with oil paint, varnishes, glazing and high gloss resin
• Mixing your own pigments, pouring mediums, incompatible paint processes and techniques
• Wax varnishes, mediums and hot wax encaustic painting

The course will be based around a self motivated project “Creating Meaning Through Layers” which you will need to bring in source material for (see materials list). The focus is on combing abstract painting languages and processes with narrative references. The project will combine abstract formulations of painting with narrative concepts.

Your work will be informed by lectures looking at artists including:
• Sigmar Polke
• Robert Rauchenberg
• Julia Mehertu
• Andrew Salle
• Dan Hays
• Glen Brown

Mixed Media – Part 2 will involve ongoing one to one advice and technical demonstrations on materials however you will also be given the opportunity to explore an individually motivated project working on a larger scale and surface, such as canvas, linen, board or aluminium.

The morning sessions will consist of re-capping on technical material demonstrations along with some visual presentations of contemporary artist work and concepts. The tutor will give on going guidance on compositional ideas, colour and paint processes. You will be encouraged to focus on your ideas, building on the technical knowledge gained in (Mixed Media Painting - Part 1). At the end of course there will be a group feed back session on your progress, we will look at how you have explored materials in relation to your concepts and the potential reading of the work.
