The course introduces you to all the above practical media areas, as well as media theory topics, which encourage you to debate the key issues around the media, including ownership and control, the spread of popular mass culture and its effects, stereotyping and misrepresentation. You can go on to media degree courses or HND courses from the Access year.

What is this course about? Who is this course for? For adults who do not have the standard entry qualifications to apply directly for degree courses. It is equivalent to doing A-levels, but in a single year.
What do I need to get on the course? No qualifications are required, but you need to have good communication skills - written and oral - and show interest and enthusiasm for Media. You also need to be clearly committed to an intensive year of study.
What will I study? The course covers print journalism (producing features, reviews, news stories), photography (portraits, documentary, still life), video, page layout and design and talk radio. Also you will be taught study skills - how to write essays, how to plan a carry out a presentation and seminar, how to organise your study time - as well as media theory, covering issues such as black and avant garde cinema, realism, pornography as well as semiotic and psychoanalytical approaches to understanding of the media.
What qualification will I get? LOCN (London Region Open College Network) Access Certificate or credits. This qualification is recognised by all universities in the UK.
What can I do after the course? You can go on to media degree courses or an HND.
How do I get on the course? For September 2008 entry complete a College application form, followed by interview.
How much does the course cost? Home students fee for September 2008 will be £1,180 per year. Concessionary students pay a £40 annual registration charge which covers any courses where concessions are available.
