A practical workshop where you will explore the development of Kinetic (moving) artworks in the context of 20th European sculpture, and explore/test how the processes can be used to create a piece of work for yourself. Learn/develop practical techniques for working with metals, recycled and found objects.

About this course
- Use different construction techniques including cutting, bending, forming, drilling, bolting and riveting.
- Understand and solder a basic electrical circuit suitable for a small artwork
- Design and construct a kinetic art object or sculpture using a variety of materials.
- Work safely, following the correct health and safety procedures.
General tools and equipment will be supplied. Most of the cost of the new materials for sampling and experimentation will be covered by the course fee. A sketchbook and drawing materials would be useful. You might want to incorporate found objects into your work.
Through demonstrations, practical work, technical notes, and instruction as a member of a group or individually, as appropriate to the session.

- A brief look at the work of early 20th century kinetic artists (Duchamp and later influences).
- Practical demonstrations of selected processes and techniques (appropriate to the above artists’ work).
- How the processes can be used to create a piece of work for yourself.
- Induction into the correct use of equipment and Health and Safety guidelines.
- Production of the finished piece of work, and methods of display.
- Review of the work and processes used through discussion.
