The module covers the development of Scotland from the political union of 1707 to the creation of the Scottish parliament in 1997. It has a broadly chronological structure. The module examines the social, political, religious and economic factors that have shaped modern Scotland, from high politics of the British and Scottish parliaments to the impacts of urbanisation, industrial growth and decline and religion on everyday life. While the focus is firmly on Scotland, it places the nation within an international context, especially with regard to migration and the Scottish economy.
Modern Scottish History:1707 to present is an Honours level course which can be taken by Open University students as a Level 3 course, and by anyone else who can demonstrate an ability to study at that level.
