The course will look at the ways in which poets in the twentieth century were influenced by poetry written in England a thousand years earlier, before the Norman Conquest. How did these poets adopt the stylistic aspects of Old English poetry – its rhythm, stress, and syntax, for example? Which themes did they adopt? Some poets also translated Old English poems into Modern English – what are the characteristics of these translations?
