On this five-day short course for healthcare professionals you'll study motor neurons and neuromuscular junctions and the diseases that affect them.
You'll learn about:
the anatomy and development of motor neurons and neuromuscular junctions
development of different motoneuron types leading to differences in their physiology and functional characteristics
You'll also learn about diseases that affect either the neuromuscular junction or motor neurons and lead to diseases affecting the motor system as a whole, including:
motor neuron disease (MND)
spinobulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA)
rare diseases, such as myasthenia gravis
Lectures are given by world leading experts in the field of neuromuscular diseases.
This course is run by the UCL Institute of Neurology in Queen Square.

About this course

By the end of this course you should be able to:
understand the anatomy, development and functional characteristics of different spinal motoneuron subtypes and their interdependence with innervated muscles
understand the underlying pathology, genetic background and current research trends in motoneuron diseases and diseases of neuromuscular junctions
understand and interpret neurophysiological assessments and characteristic histopathology in neuromuscular junction diseases
critically evaluate the validity of disease models for the development of future therapies and to understand the difficulties designing clinical trials in NMD

This course is for healthcare students and professionals working in:
biological sciences

pharmacy
occupational therapy

physiotherapy
You should have an upper second-class Bachelor’s degree or equivalent or relevant work experience.

You'll receive a certificate of attendance if you complete the course.
The short course isn't assessed. If you're taking the course as a taster module you'll need to complete coursework and an exam.
The course is accredited for CPD by the Royal Colleges of Physicians.

Teaching and structure

  • a standalone short course for CPD purposes
  • a 'taster module' that allows you to earn UCL credits which can be used towards a postgraduate qualification at UCL if you enrol within five years
