About this course

You do not need any formal qualification or experience to join the course, but you must be aged 19 or over and have a basic level of Maths and English. If you need help with your Maths and/or English the College can provide you with support which will bring your Maths and English up to the required standard. All students will be interviewed to assess their eligibility for the course.

Motor Vehicle Studies (Introductory) - NVQ Level 1

Introduction:
This practical `hands-on` course will introduce you to many aspects of the motor vehicle maintenance and repair industry. The course provides opportunities for you to investigate vehicle systems and gain a basic understanding of how these systems are constructed and function. Throughout the programme you will be encouraged to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to undertake maintenance and repair tasks, as well as recognise the service requirements of a range of vehicles.

Study Mode & Location:
This one year Part-Time+ course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
The course covers:

  • Engine Lubrication.
  • Cooling Systems.
  • Spark Ignition Systems.
  • Electrical Systems.
  • Braking Systems.
  • Transmission.
  • Fuel & Exhaust.
  • Suspension & Steering.
  • Wheels & Tyres.
  • Health & Safety.


It will be delivered in our extensive and well equipped garage and training rooms. Due to the nature of the course any additional time spent practicing or generating portfolio evidence away from College will help you achieve the qualification, but there is no formal requirement to work at home.

Assessment:
You will be assessed via a combination of observations of practical activities and a portfolio of evidence. Assessments only take place once you feel confident to undertake an observed practical task and formally request an assessment. The theory and principles of vehicle maintenance and repair will also be assessed. There are no formal exams on this course.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course allows progression to a range of higher level Motor Vehicle programmes such as:

  • an NVQ Level 2.
  • the IMI Technical Certificate.
  • the IMI Technical Diploma.
  • an HNC/HND or Foundation Degree.


Additional Costs & Resource Charges:
There will be a resource charge of £75 for this course (this fee will be substantially reduced if you are on income-based benefits). Personal Protective Equipment is mandatory in all workshops (ie steel toe capped boots and overalls). These can be purchased at a reduced price from the College at enrolment.

How To Apply
You will need to complete a Further Education Application Form. These will be available from mid-May.
Many courses have limited places so please return your application form as soon as possible. Following acceptance of your application, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.

Part-Time+ Course Benefits
