Suitable for: Bike owners who wish to gain the knowledge and skills required to carry out routine maintenance i.e. servicing, lubrication, replacing parts and adjustments on their own machine.

Course programme

This practical course gives motorcyclists an all round knowledge of servicing and maintaining a variety of different makes and types of machine, by working on your own and other student's bikes. The theory content will cover how things like the engine, gearbox, brakes and suspension work, and what to look for when things start to go wrong. You will also learn what tools to buy and to use them correctly. By the end of eleven weeks you should be able to confidently carry out routine bike adjustments and lubrication tasks including changing engine oil and filter.

By the end of the course you should be able to do most if not all of the following:

  • Apply Health and Safety procedures whilst carrying out repair and maintenance activities on a motor bike.
  • Name at least 10 components on a motorbike.
  • Identify 4 specialist motor bike tools.
  • Retrieve and apply data from 2 workshop manuals. Identify 2 tyre types.
  • Repair a puncture on a motor bike tyre.

  • Remove and refit a wheel bearing.
  • Remove and refit a steering bearing.
  • Identify 5 brake components.
  • Identify 5 fuel system components.
  • Identify 6 requirements of The M.O.T. test.
  • Check condition of spark plugs, and make adjustments if necessary.
