Course programme

You will learn a traditional approach to silicon mould making, producing a one-part open faced mould of your own clay relief. You will be shown how to use your master mould with a wide range of casting materials and techniques. By the end of the course you will have acquired a number of casts and technical information to take forward into your own practice.

Topics covered

An emphasis will be placed on the use of a jesmonite casting system, using both pigments and metal gel coats.

Other casting materials include plaster, silicon and wax, and students will gain experience of producing waxes for metal and glass fabrication.

From these casts we will cover a range of finishing and polishing techniques to bring them to a finished object.

You will learn the principals of multi part moulds, making a two-part mould from a ready-made object.

Alongside this you will be shown how to produce life casts using both plaster bandage and alginate to create a cast plaster positive.

You will also have a chance to experiment with making one off objects by building your own moulds for a quicker and more experimental approach to casting, which can be integrated into the traditional skills and techniques covered.
