Surrealism is one of the most varied and influential art movements of the 20th century. For this one-day course we will investigate how the movement was born from the context of Post-World War I Paris through the experimentations of its founder and self-proclaimed ‘Pope’, André Breton, and how its theories were inspirational for painters, filmmakers, photographers and sculptors for decades. We will look at a variety of artists impacted by Surrealism including, but not limited to, Man Ray, Luis Buñuel, Dora Maar, René Magritte, Jackson Pollock, Lee Miller and Pablo Picasso. Part of the course will also approach the movement with a critical eye in terms of gender and sexuality.
