This course is designed to provide the additional technical education for graduates who are already in possession of an IEng accredited degree, for them to step up to CEng standard. The course is delivered by a blend of active and respected academics as well as Chartered Engineers in the fields of structures and civil engineering. The modules provide opportunities for individual research as well as group based activities, where you will tackle industrially relevant challenges, requiring innovative and creative solutions which recognise the wider implications of engineering activities.

About this course

This course provides a well-balanced blend of academic study and professional skill development. Graduates from the course will have employment opportunities under a variety of civil engineering, construction management or related disciplines.

A minimum of a 2:2 classification from a Civil Engineering degree course. Preferably one that has IEng accreditation. International students with a cognate degree and applicants with relevant work experience will be considered on a case by case basis.

Year 1

Building Information Modelling (Theropy and Applications)

Building Information Modelling (or BIM) is fast becoming an integral aspect of the construction industry. This new approach goes beyond the norms of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and opens up the possibility to integrate 3D modelling and digital information into the entire construction process. In this module you will critically investigate and analyse the theory behind BIM and how it is implemented throughout all phases of the design and construction process. We will look at the financial and business benefits that BIM can offer and how new emerging technologies and standards impact on its application for designers, constructors and facilities managers. In addition we will also look at the practical implementation of BIM through the use of industry standard software tools.

Civil and Structural Engineering Dissertation

The MSc Dissertation enables you to undertake an in-depth individual research project of a technical nature. It should involve the use of analytical methods and modelling and will require the definition and investigation of a problem. Consideration will need to be given to aspects of the wider engineering context such as environmental and sustainability implications; ethical, health, safety, security and risk issues; intellectual property; and legal, contractual, quality and cost issues. The assessment regime ensures that you are able to demonstrate an ability to plan, manage and evaluate the outcomes of your research and an ability to communicate it to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Financial Management of Projects

Delivery within budget is a key requirement of successful projects and programmes. This module is designed to provide deep understanding of not only the methods of producing financial information throughout the project life-cycle, but also the implications of such information for project and programme outcomes.

Foundation Engineering

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of advanced RC foundations such as pile foundations and diaphragm walls considering variable ground conditions.

Further Geotechnical Analysis

The principal aim of this module is to extend your knowledge of the relevant theory and practical applications of geotechnical principles in ground engineering, in particular with regard to ground and structure support. The module will cover traditional approaches and techniques integrated with the use of computer programs and numerical modelling, including lower hemispherical projection analysis for the design of underground spaces.

Further Structural Analysis

This module aims to develop the analytical skills developed at UG level with advanced topics such as finite element analysis, structural dynamics, etc. The intention is to cover the theories and applications' of the topics and approaches directly relevant to modern structural engineering practice.

Structural Engineering Project

The overall intention is to provide students with experience of being a member of a team undertaking a realistic design project. This will enhance their design skills (in particular in Structural Engineering) and will allow them to also appreciate the practicalities and difficulties of integrating a variety of topics to arrive at a working solution for a complicated design problem. The module will also develop awareness of the Civil Engineer’s contribution and obligations to society.
